 [Shadows Are] Starlit Flights [Abroad]
« Thread Started on Oct 9, 2007, 6:48pm »

Evening
Open
The stars are just starting to appear in the sky as the sun sets, however, omnious-looking clouds are on the horizon and thunder occasionally rattles the air as a storm approaches. Wind Clan leader Circe is about to take flight on a scavenging expedition in hopes of finding some food before the storm hits.

------------------------------------------------

A slight sigh escaped a parted beak as a single, black bird perched herself upon an overhanging rock. Her ebony-blue feathers ruffled slightly against a harsh wind, blowing fast from the bowls of the storm that was quickly brewing to the east. The Murkrow knew it was a bad idea to fly in a storm, but, that was why she was flying before the rain hit right?

Slowly, she spread her wings, but paused for another moment. Shouldn't she say where she was going? That would probably be a better idea, after all, she didn't want anyone to think her loyalty, her love, for her 'family' had swayed because of the sudden storms that were brewing even more often now. Nests were in danger in the winds, and food was slowly becoming even more scarce than it usually was seeing as it was hard to get out flying in such weather...

Folding her wings back to her thin sides, Circe turned her partially blinded left eye towards the horizon and fixed her good right eye on the cliff the Wind Clan called home. At first, she didn't seem anyone, of course, they couldn't be blamed if they weren't out in the open, but, she waited for a few moments nonetheless for even just a glimpse of a young Pidgey or even Zubat.

Looking up at the sky, a smaller bird came to view. Standing at the edge of the cliffs, his eyes examined the clouds. The dark blue feathers seemed dull as the sun disappeared from the sky, making him seem smaller as the color of night merged with the color of his body. Thinking thoroughly, Navy was coming up with ways to survive the storms that have been hitting Mount Midori. Birds of the clan have had it pretty rough with the food shortage, but because of the rain - some have started to starve. Flying in the rain /can/ be done, but it wasn't safe. The water prevents the birds from seeing their path clearly, which could lead into dangerous situations. That wasn't the only problem that the clan members have, too. Raids have been lessened as well, because the Petal clan has had more help from the Splash clan. Due to the fact that the rain strengthens them, they have been more energetic and motivated against the birds.

Deep in thought, the young bird started hopping around the cliffs. His eyes were still focused on the clouds up above him, but another bird came into his view as he turned around. To his surprise, it was Circe. Pausing for a bit, he bowed his head down - showing respect. Though the Murkrow wasn't that old compared to the Taillow, her rank in the clan has always amazed Navy.

The low rumble of thunder could be heard echoing in the distance. The ever-present smell of looming precipitation also hung in the air like an ominous odor, the sign of storms. Weather like this was what the young Hoothoot tried to avoid, but it looked imminent tonight. With food scarce, all the other members of the Clan had stored there food, stashed it all away so other couldn't find their nourishment. The feeling throughout the whole nesting grounds was dark, just like the clouds.

Aquilius ruffled his feathers, giving a low whistle out for others to here. Even though his short period here with the other members of the Wind Clan had been just that, short, the bird Pokemon felt it was his duty to warn other of the storm, however obvious it may seem. He hoped one day this post would be useful.

In the distance, a crack of thunder reverberated, sending a surprising amount of noise to the small bird's ears. His saucer eyes zoomed out into the distance, catching multiple strikes of lightning. It was even more important now that the rest of the Clan knew. "Whoooo, Whoo." The strength of the whistle grew with the intensity of the storm. It was raining, hard, somewhere.

Just as Aquilius himself was going to turn in himself, in a makeshift nest that had been awkwardly constructed in a crevice near the base of one of the lower cliffs, he caught a sight of their leader, Circe, about to take off in flight. He knew he shouldn't meddle, but the temptation was to great. Switching foots diligently, he quickly made his way over to the dark Murkrow.

"Excuse me. Not to be a bother, but where are you off to?" He really hoped this question wouldn't set off to big off a commotion, like the slightest hint of a question would for any other Clan he had been in. This Murkrow was different, though. She was understanding, a great leader. Maybe this time it would be different.

Circe gave a gentle nod to the Taillow, saying that such an action was not necessary around her. She could get snappy, yes, and was definately loud when it came to debating and arguing, just about any Pokemon that had seen her do so could tell one that, but the formal gestures had always made her uneasy. Yes, it was nice that such respect was shone, it was definately different for her, especially from a male, but, it always made her feel like, well, maybe that she was just too respected. After all, though she was the leader of Wind Clan, she wasn't some queen.

"There is no need for such gestures, simple politeness will do..." she cawed simply. Yeah, she wanted a bit of respect, she wasn't one to let others walk all over her, most definately not, but, in her eyes there was such a thing as too much.

"Excuse me. Not to be a bother, but where are you off to?"

The sudden, hooting voice of another member of Wind Clan seemed to have started the Murkrow slightly, though she immediately ruffled up her feathers to hide the jump, just making it look like she was warming herself against the cold drops of rain. Her good eye had been turned toward Navy, which, unfortunately, left her blinded side to Aquilius. Though, indeed, her scarred, left eye bore no discoloration to show blindness, she had an extremely hard time seeing out of that particular crimson orb thanks to an event that had happened earlier in her life, one that she generally snapped at anyone who asked her about.

She hastily turned her large, golden-yellow beak to the Hoothoot now, rainwater dripping off of the brim of her 'hat'. There was one advantage to having such a plume, it kept both rain and sun out of her eyes anyway.

"Was going to try to scavenge a bit before the storm hit, unfortunately it does not seem that the legends of storms are on our side today...." she squawked simply, turning her gaze upward for a moment. She had a feeling that both birds knew the current hunger situation their clan was in, so didn't bother mentioning it. If they didn't, well, they would probably find out on their own soon enough. She let out a slightly annoyed little huff at the drastic change in weather. The rain, though however doubtful it was, may bring new food possibilities with it but it was dangerous to fly in, especially with such a downpour. She wasn't particularly worried for her own safety, but those of others that may have followed her out of the safety of the cliff face.

Muttering rather darkly beneath her breath and cursing the weather, Circe jumped from her perch on the rock and landed with a clatter of claws upon the rock floor. Normally, she tried to keep a nicer attitude toward her clan mates, but, it was quite noticable she was beginning to get slightly touchy as the sudden storm dampened her mood.

"As soon as the rain slows slightly I'll risk a quick flight... we need at least one scavenger out today..." she muttered something else beneath her breath, but it was illegible, probably something about the current state of her clan's hunger.

The night's rain had come. It poured and poured, so hard that the Hoothoot began switching legs even faster than before, a very strange occurrence for Aquilius. Giving a gentle hoot, he turned to the Murkrow.

Wanting to say something, but not knowing what to say, Aquilius just turned his head, or in the bird's case his whole body, the Hoothoot thought to himself. He thought about how he was justing be used by all of the other Clans, he thought about how this one seemed to be different. Wind Clan did seem to be a bit out of the ordinary, already seeing acts of kindness that would normally be very rare in any Clan he had graced.

He thought about this black bird in front of him, how she would probably risk her life for the good of the Clan. Why hadn't this bird known the answer from the first time he stepped foot in this Clan? He would have to be of assistance in the violence of these storms, by improving the visibility in the torrential rains.

Turning his brown-feathered body to the Leader once again, he said "Circe, may I ask to go with you. You will need eyes to see the way through these terrible storms. I feel I could be of at least some assistance." Hopefully, these words would go with Circe, and she would accept him as a scavenge partner. Hopefully...

Overhearing the words of the Hoothoot behind Circe, Navy's head perked up and listened to the words. The rain has started to pour heavier, as the storm clouds filled the sky with gray. The loud drops startled Navy into walking slowly to the two other birds, beak open - wanting to say something. He must choose his words carefully.

Though he wanted to go with them in order to help the clan - he did not know what he could say to persuade Circe into allowing him to join the group. He began to think of possible ways in which he could aid them.

"You will need eyes to see the way through these terrible storms."

Navy had to work with that. If Circe agrees to let Aquilius join, she would not need any more help in navigating around the rain. With the Hoothoot's vision, there was no more worry. Scavenging was something that Navy wasn't too skilled at, either - so that couldn't be his reason. But what if ...

His eyes widened, and instead of walking slowly to the duo, he started jogging up to them. He had an idea. Only a few feet away, he asked Circe, "Do you have any idea where to get the food?" Though asked as a question, the Taillow did not let them speak, and talked again. Spreading his short wings, he stated, "I know where they are. I can help."

Circe seemed to process the Hoothoot's request slowly. Indeed, the owl Pokemon's eyes would be helpful, especially seeing her own left one had been blinded earlier in her life, however, it had never really occured to her that Hoothoots were strong fliers, with such wings like they had. It would be dangerous for him in the galing winds and rains of the storm. A Pidgeot would have probably been suited better, but, alas, as far as she knew, no Pidgeot had graced Wind Clan yet.

Slowly, she gave a slight nod of her head, rainwater spilling off the brim of her 'hat' and splashing onto her beak. "As you wish..." she said slowly, thinking over the decision even as she spoke it. "But make sure you do not try to fight the winds, try riding them, it will make the flight easier on your wings."

Generally, Circe prefered flying alone, especially on particularly starry nights, but, on such a night as this, she knew full well that not having at least one flight companion would be folly, and sure enough, extremely dangerous. She would do her clan no good if she was smashed and broken by the winds against the cliff face.

"Do you have any idea where to get the food? I know where they are. I can help."

However, Circe had not been expecting yet another request to accompany her, this time by a Taillow. She examined him closely. He had seemed rather eager, judging by how quickly he had approached, and his offer surprised her.

She had known where food was before the rains had come, but now, the food was scattered by the heavy storms, and indeed, having someone that knew where supplies still were would indeed be an asset. And both Taillow, and their evolution Swellow, were decently strong fliers.

"Very well," she cawed, extending her wings again. "That knowledge would be most helpful. Remember to pay attention to wind currents, we don't need anyone blown into the cliff..." She was rather serious on her last point. Wind Clan needed as many fliers as possible to gather food, and if one was stuck up in the nests with a broken wing or something of the sort, they would be even worse off.

She turned quickly back toward the stormy skies, bowing her head against the winds and rain so that the water splashed against her hat-shaped plume rather than in her eyes. "Stay close, and if one of you lose sight of the others, head back towards the cliff and stay there until you sight us again. It's dangerous to fly alone in such weather..." She spread her wings completely, and shoved herself into the air.

Almost immediately, she felt the wind begin to grab at her feathers, trying to cause her to spiral out of control in the storm's grasp. She cawed loudly, cursing the fact that she was one of the smaller birds and not some Pidgeotto or Pidgeot, however, she began to arc her wings until she managed to straighten herself out on a wind current. The rain splashed heavily against her feathers, soaking them thoroughly almost immediately. This was going to be a long flight...

Riding the wind currents back and forth, the Wind Clan leader awaited the others to take flight after her.

Hearing the crack of his tiny wings, Aquilius immodestly gave a protest hoot, flapping his wings to show that he was no flightless loser. "Are you saying that I'm fat?" Aquilius may not have shown it, but he was very subconscious of his weight, and even the slightest mention of anything about his body, other than his eyes, would set him off.

The Tailow was also accepted in the scavenge party, as was Aquilius, so it was promising to still be dangerous, but not as lonely. These strong gusts would indeed be a challenge for the short-winged, plump Hoothoot, but as long as the Clan leader was watching, he would try his best not to disappoint. Letting a another coo go, Aquilius watched as Circe ascended into that air, than gawked as the wind ruffled her feathers. The moments that passed were very long and agonizing, would Circe regain her composure? Thankfully, the dark bird straightened out her wings and took to the sky with ease, the Hoothoot breathing a sigh of relief.

Not wanting to be left behind, Aquilius took the advice about staying together and flying to a cliff if things became to risky to heart and leaped off the cliff. This was always the scariest part of Hoothoot flight, as if his wings muscles weren't developed enough, the rest of the bird would come falling down to a very painful defeat of life. Not thinking about the many feet down, but ahead, Aquilius slowly began to flap his tiny wings. Soon, he was moving forward in a steady pace. A strong gust of wind slept over the cliffs at that very moment, catching the brown bird off balance.

Almost falling to imminent doom, Aquilius instantly began rolling in the air, finally steadying himself with his sorry excuses for wings, then flying on the same path he had started. Throughout the whole time, his left leg had stayed tucked in while his right limply hung out. His left about to go to sleep, Aquilius quickly switched them for a change in blood flow.

Widening his eyes, then blinking to get out the clouds of rain in his way, Aquilius quickly located Circe. Flying up besides her, he stated, "I can fly. We just need Navy to tell me what to be looking for."

Navy was the last to take the wind current, knowing that he had to stay behind for Circe to hear his commands. Though navigators were usually the ones to lead the party up front, the strong rain demanded a new strategy. Because he is behind, they could hear his voice better. Up front, the storm would muffle his directions. Besides, he also felt that it was right for Circe to lead them - seeing as she /is/ their leader.

Spreading his wings, he hopped up and took the same current that the other two have rode on. He tried to do so, anyway. Taillows and Swellows are natural fliers compared to the other birds - but Navy wasn't an ordinary bird. He is capable of flying swiftly, but his short wingspan needs him to use more strength in order to stay in the sky. Through practice, he has learned how to fly better, but, as all birds knew - flying with the rain is not an easy task.

Falling to the ground, he had to think of a new strategy. Seeing as how flying normally failed, he began to try a different way. He took the current again, but this time with a different technique. Instead of letting the wind carry him above the mountain ground, he flapped his wings harder to stay with it. The falling waters blinded him a bit, but through his keen vision he could still see the shadows of his companions.

The Taillow started slowly at first, but soon got the hang of it. When he was sure that he would not get swept away with the storm, he swiftly came up behind the Hoothoot. The rumble of thunder sounded around the trio.

"Good food will be hard to find." He shouted at them, trying to speak over the storm, "The storm has blown them all over the place by now. Instead of looking for small plants, we should be heading towards the bigger trees - where the food is defended by their cover." It was what he remembered speaking to the elders. They had more experience around these rains, and so he felt that he could trust them with their words.

"Aquilius, can you spot any huge ones?"

"Are you saying that I'm fat?"

Circe had to roll her eyes at that, fighting a huge impulse to snap something back that most would have probably found rude. Already, the weather was putting a downer on her mood, and she really need any other irritances. She may have looked small compared to a Swello or Pidgeot, but, her most threatening trait was probably the fact that she wasn't afraid to get into other Pokemon's faces and speak her mind, no matter how bigger or stronger they were compared to her.

"No... I made no implication of such matter..." the Murkrow cawed simply. She had her crimson eyes narrowed against the driving rain and blinding lightning. She was not fond of flying in such storms at all, but she would have to deal with it, for her clan's sake.

"The storm has blown them all over the place by now. Instead of looking for small plants, we should be heading towards the bigger trees - where the food is defended by their cover."

Circe faintly heard Navy over the rumblings of thunder. Of course, she hadn't even thought about the trees! And with eyes like Aquilius had, she hoped the Hoothoot could make out such large shapes even among the rains.

She gave another fierce beat of her wings, cursing loudly beneath her breath as she felt them suddenly shift direction, blowing at them rather than with them. Yet another one of those instances she wished she were just a bit bigger.

"Break your wings!" she squawked loudly, pausing in the air and spreading her own wide. "Don't get blown into the cliff! We're going to have to shift directions until the winds are with us again!" She huffed under her breath. .Ironic we're called Wind Clan and yet the winds are so violent towards us... she thought, rather irritably.

Listening to the Clan leader's instructions, Aquilius broke his wings, spreading them to catch the undertow of the wind, keeping himself balanced and steady throughout the duration of the gust. A reprieve finally arriving, the Hoothoot relaxed his wings, but only slightly. They were now in air travel, so caution and teamwork were of utmost importance.

"Aquilius, can you spot any huge ones?"

Navy had put up her idea, and it was a rather good one. Mulling over what trees usually looked like, the brown bird achieved a decent idea of what one would look like, or at least the silhouette, as the actual tree would never be visible in this kind of weather.

Looking around, Aquilius tightened his eyes, the two arrow shaped eyebrows crunching tight, his eyelashes blinking back the near blinding rains. Finally, after a few minutes of struggling with flying and observing, a tree was finally in his view. "Southwest of our position is a small clearing. To the west of that is a whole thicket of rather impressing looking trees."

Indeed, the clearing was visible due to the shadow difference of trees versus no trees. Rather large trees, most likely old oaks, towered in the distance, making the site even more strange and dark. He hoped is comrades had heard his quivering voice over the roaring winds, and deep growling of thunder.
